17th Century Polychrome Figure of the Archangel Michael

17th Century Polychrome Figure of the Archangel Michael

This is an exquisite, polychrome saint, or santo, possibly depicting the archangel Michael or Raphael, from the 17th or early 18th century. The statue is most likely Spanish, but possibly Italian. Beautifully carved and gilded with remnants of flesh-toned paint on the limbs and face. The figure still possesses its two wings intact, which is rare for statues of this age, and the turned head and forward leg give the piece a wonderful sense of movement. Gorgeously carved flowing robes are painted and gilded in an intricate, baroque pattern of swirls and flowers.
This is a truly rare and beautiful example of 17th century religious carving.
