This is an exquisite, carved wooden polychrome figure of Christ on the cross, 18th Century, most probably Italian.
This rare carving very closely follows in the tradition of Giambologna's Cristo Morto (The Dead Christ on the Cross), c. 1588, in which the dead Christ is presented as an idealized figure of classical beauty whose physical suffering retains a sense of nobility.
This particular carving has missing arms and toes, but the quiet dignity of the figure remains intact.
Christ's head is gently inclined to one side, his eyes are closed, and a gilded loin cloth drapes around his hips. Traces of red paint emanate from his wounds, symbolizing the perpetual nature of his living sacrifice.
Glorious patina and marks of age throughout the piece, with losses to paint and gilding, some cracks, old worm holes. The sculpture is stable, however, with no remaining loose parts.
Some pieces of art transcend materiality. This is one of them.
