A Napoleon III Style Gilt Bronze Mounted Mahogany and Marquetry Table
A Napoleon III Style Gilt Bronze Mounted Mahogany and Marquetry Table
This is a stunning Napoleon III Style, Gilt Bronze Mounted Mahogany and Marquetry table, with a flip top that turns it into a games table with compartment inside.
Most probably English, late nineteenth century or early 20th century. Superb marquetry on the table top with scrolls, flowers and vines surrounding a central medallion. The medallion features a number of musical instruments, including a flute, trumpet, castanets and sheet music. The apron also features marquetry with acanthus leaves, cornucopias and beautiful birds on the two front corner posts.
The whole table top is banded with gilt bronze mounts and rests on tapered legs held by an x shaped stretcher with oval medallion in the centre. Solid brass casters.
This table opens with a twist mechanism, allowing the open top to rest on the base. The top opens to a felted games surface with four marquetry rosettes at each corner.
Table is in overall very good condition with no damage to the marquetry. The felted surface is faded and has some tears and needs restoration. One bronze mount has come slightly loose. Tiny nicks to one of the legs and the inside of the table. Some wobbling, but not due to any structural defect. This table works best as a side table, and would look stunning in any room.
34" wide by 18" deep by 29" high.
