After Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Souvenir de Mortefontaine, 19th Century

After Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Souvenir de Mortefontaine, 19th Century

A beautiful 19th century copy of one of Jean Baptiste Camille Corot's  (1796- 1875) most famous works, Souvenir de Mortefontaine, 1864. From France.
Corot was a  pivotal figure in 19th Century French landscape painting: his career began in the Neo-Classical tradition and later anticipated the plein-air innovations of Impressionism. He was regarded as a master by his contemporaries and by the Impressionists.
The original of this painting, housed in the Louvre, is often considered one of the most beautiful landscapes ever painted. It is a scene of sublime tranquility, with the figures of a woman and children playing under the shade of a huge tree, with a shimmering lake in the background.
In this work Corot came as close as he ever would to Impressionism: the landscape is rendered in hazy tones, the brushwork is loose and spontaneous, and the interplay of light and shadow all contribute to a work of profound lyricism.
This 19th Century copy is very well executed and a  lovely tribute to Corot's work.  It is in good condition with a small repair in the upper right hand quadrant and some stretcher marks in the centre of the canvas.
The later gilt frame is is very good condition with no major losses or chips.
