Antique Mexican Retablo "Exvoto" Oil on Tin, 1936

Antique Mexican Retablo "Exvoto" Oil on Tin, 1936

Beautiful Mexican retablo or ex voto, painted in 1936, describing a mother giving thanks to the Virgin for the safety of her two boys. The crowned Virgin of Guadeloupe floats surrounded by rays of light and three angels, while the mother kneels before her with her two boys. The background is painted in a lovely celestial blue, still very bright, and the text remains very legible.
Some losses of paint and dents to the tin, but the weathered patina of this retablo only adds to its charm. Clearly dated 10th of July 1936.
Mexican retablos are small devotional paintings that were commonly created in gratitude to a sacred person or saint who intervened in an event that posed a threat to their well-being.
A beautiful and moving piece of folk art.
