Ariadne and the Panther Bronze After Johann Heinrich Dannecker, Mantel Clock

Ariadne and the Panther Bronze After Johann Heinrich Dannecker, Mantel Clock

A lovely, solid bronze mantel clock depicting Ariadne and the Panther, after the famous sculpture by Johann Heinrich Dannecker (1758-1841). Here the princess Ariadne, wife of Dionysius, sits gracefully on a panther as she holds a swath of drapery in one hand. Beneath her, between two doric columns, is suspended a round clock with metal dial beneath bevelled glass , the whole resting on a rectangular, marble base.
Dannecker's Ariadne and the Panther is known as his masterpiece and one of the most important works of sculpture of the 19th century. It was created between 1810 and 1814 and exhibited at the first museum in Frankfurt, where it became a piece of pilgrimage for many visitors.
Clock is not functional. Some oxidation to the gilt frame of the clock and to the left shoulder, and tiny scratch to the right buttock of the figure, please see photos.  Otherwise in fine structural condition with gorgeous patina.
No markings on the sculpture or clock.
