Four Continental Engraved and Gilt Green Glass Roemers, c.1900
Four Continental Engraved and Gilt Green Glass Roemers, c.1900
An exquisite set of four Roemer glasses, circa 1900. Each in bright green glass engraved and gilded with scrolling flowers and graduated gold rims. All four in mint condition.
These glasses are probably from the Netherlands, but may also be German or English.
Roemer glasses were a form of glass that originated mainly in the Rhineland and the Netherlands from the 15th through the 17th century. The hollow base of the glass was built up by coiling strands of molten glass around a conical core, and the glass was usually green.
The form continued for centuries afterwards, with later examples featuring more fanciful decorations. In England, the word Roemer was anglicized to become "rummer", and English variants were produced from the 18th century onwards.
