Dutch Landscape Painting, Johan Veltens, 1814-1891

This is a gorgeous landscape painting by well known Dutch painter Johan Diderik Cornelis Veltens, 1814-1891. Oil on Board entitled "In't Gein Bij Abcoude." In a beautiful, period gilt frame.
A lovely scene depicting a figure on a boat on a meandering stream, amid fields and rushes, with the spire of the village church in the background and ducks in the foreground. The whole painting emitting that soft light for which the Dutch are famous.
This painting has been in a private collection since 1986 and was originally purchased from the Dominion Gallery in Montreal. The dominion Gallery, which opened in 1941, was one of Montreal's most important galleries over many years, hosting multiple exhibitions of some of the most important Canadian artists of the time. Max Stern, an art historian, became its director in 1942 and owner in 1947.
This particular painting was especially selected by Mr. Stern for the previous owners in June 1986, less than one year before his death in Paris.
