Monumental Carved and Painted Saint, France, 18th-19th Century

Monumental Carved and Painted Saint, France, 18th-19th Century

A monumentally scaled carved figure of a Saint from the late 18th century or early 19th century, from France. This is one of the most beautifully carved Saints we have ever featured, with the figure draped in glorious robes and a cape that falls asymmetrically, the whole intricately painted in elaborate floral motifs in tones of red, green and gold. The saint's hands are held up in prayer and are exquisitely carved, with each finger still intact. The face is framed by the Saint's undulating curls and is painted in flesh tones with rosy cheeks and a delicately painted mouth and eyes.
The whole rests on a base of carved angel heads.
The quality of this piece truly puts it in the category of a work of art.
Losses to the paint and gilding throughout, commensurate with age.
At 20" high this Saint figure is larger than most, and has a good, solid weight.
