A beautiful oil on canvas by Scottish 19th century artist Hugh Cameron, RSA RSW, ROI (1835-1918), in an exquisite gilt frame. This painting is a particularly moving and wistful example of Cameron's work. Cameron was renowned for his fine figurative painting, in particular seascapes featuring mothers and children, interiors with families, or landscapes with figures. The canvas is signed lower left and measures 13.75" by 9.25".

Cameron was born in 1835 in Edinburg, and studied at the Trustees Academy and later at the Royal Scottish Academy. He began exhibiting regularly from 1854 to the year of his death in 1918. He was a celebrated artist in his lifetime, with membership in the Royal Scottish Academy, RSA, and the Royal Oil Painters Institute, ROI, and was a founding member of the Royal Society of Watercolour, RSW. He exhibited widely, and his work is represented in galleries and museums, including the National Galleries of Scotland.
