This is an exquisite pair of large Art Nouveau, cast iron, gilded shelf brackets from the early part of the twentieth century, most probably French, 1910 to 1919.
These fabulous shelf brackets exhibit all the hallmarks of Art Nouveau style: sinuous curves, flowing lines and stylized, floral elements. The patina on these is absolutely gorgeous, with bits of iron showing through the warm tones of the gilding.
The Art Nouveau movement was also known for its unconventional use of materials such as cast iron, as a break from the more traditional materials of the past. It was a movement that merged applied arts with the fine arts, and these brackets are a fine example of that.
